"And one of them was, if we don't solve my mom's case, then the documentary becomes a tool for me to get my mom's story out there and provide some momentum." And the series has certainly accomplished that. "In setting out to do this, I didn't have an expectation that we would solve my mom's case, but there are many goals I have had throughout this process and they sort of evolve," Hamburg also told Esquire. What it did do, though, was bring light to the case and start a conversation around it.
"I can't get into details, but it's been extremely illuminating."Īt the end of the day, it's not really important that Murder on Middle Beach didn't solve the murder of Barbara Hamburg because that isn't what the documentary set out to do. "There have been corroborating leads, correcting things, things that we didn't know about," Hamburg told Esquire. The episode starts with Madison going through his mother's belongings, trying to find any clues that could lead him to the killer. 8 through HBO's YouTube channel, he is currently combing through these files for additional information that could eventually help solve the case. 57 min (167) In Murder on Middle Beach season 1 episode 2, titled 'Tables & Rooms,' filmmaker and investigator Madison Hamburg continues his search for answers regarding his mother's murder. At the end of the series, Madison wins his case with the Freedom of Information Commission to receive case files relating to his mother's homicide investigation. But just because the finale has aired, that doesn't mean the story is over. Murder on Middle Beach didn't decisively eliminate any other suspects. In the series, Madison does some digging and is able to obtain school records that show Barbara did indeed drop Ali off at school on the morning of her death, confirming Ali's alibi and eliminating her as a suspect. It was then Beach and Ali who discovered Barbara's body. Ali had always maintained her innocence, claiming that she had been dropped off at school by Barbara on the morning of the murder, and that she only returned home later that day with Beach, who picked her up from school after Ali's texts to her mother went unanswered.

Barbara's sister, Conway Beach, makes a number of accusations in the series accusing Ali of murdering her mother, believing she did so before going to school on that day. One issue that was resolved in the documentary was the status of Ali Hamburg, Madison's sister and the daughter of Barbara, as a potential suspect in the case. Filmmaker Madison Hamburg returns to his hometown of Madison, Conn., to piece together the life story of his mother, Barbara, who was brutally murdered there in 2010.
#MURDER ON MIDDLE BEACH SEASON 1 TV#
Director Madison Hamburg's relentless pursuit of the truth throughout his quest to find his mother's killer turned over a lot of stones, and even though the TV series has concluded, Madison's work continues off-camera. But even if the central question at the center of the case remains a mystery, Murder on Middle Beach solved at least one question that had long plagued the decade-old case. I will come back after the series is over to leave a proper review. The HBO true crime documentary series Murder on Middle Beach has reached its conclusion, without any grand reveal regarding who killed Barbara Hamburg. (I hate leaving reviews for an entire series before the series is finished but I had to with some of the things I was reading. I'm very interested to see how the rest of this doc plays out. In the pilot you kinda think you already know who committed the murder but that quickly changes. The pilot was enough for me to want to know a little more and EP.2 has really gripped me in and gave me more than I expected after the pilot. It's actually a refreshing twist on most true crime doc's with the son of the murder victim being the one asking all the questions, and half the time, it's the first time anyone has asked them these questions (Police really seemed to have dropped the ball on this investigation) while also learning things about his mother and his family that he never knew growing up. Altogether that’s where Murder on Middle Beach excels, in its intimacy. A four-part documentary series revolving around the case of single mother Barbara Hamburg, who was brutally murdered in 2010 near her home in the upper-middle class enclave of Madison, Connecticut. This is thanks to Hamburg’s deeply intimate filmmaking style that refuses to turn off the camera even when he’s at his lowest moments. It's kinda unfair to say "I can't watch this because he grew up privileged". 80 Watching Murder on Middle Beach often feels like spying on Hamburg’s most private therapy sessions. Episode 1 does start slow but there's a reason for that and if you watch the 2nd episode you understand why. I had to step in here because people make garbage reviews based off watching only a few minutes.
